Hyphen with imperative
Personal pronouns after an imperative are joined to it and to each other by a hyphen.
- allons-nous-en
- prête-le-moi
- vends-lui-en
The only exception is with pronoun en and y with you since it changes into t'.
- va-t'en
- rends-t'y
However, if these personal pronouns refer to an infinitive placed after the imperative, the hyphens disappear.
- viens me le dire
- laisse-moi la regarder
To determine whether or not a personal pronoun refers to the verb, the sentence must be placed in the indicative. Pronouns before the conjugated verb refer to the verb and will therefore be hyphenated to the imperative.
- viens me le dire (tu viens me le dire)
- laisse-moi la regarder (tu me laisses la regarder)
- regarde-le chanter (tu le regardes chanter)
